AUSTIN PATHOLOGY recognises that Teaching and Research are major community responsibilities of university teaching hospitals. These activities set the quality standards for clinical care and train many health professionals in medicine, nursing, medical laboratory science and other allied health sciences.

Teaching at Austin Pathology embraces undergraduate, post-graduate, professional and continuing education. Pathology staff commit more than 750 hours per year for teaching and training for the following groups:

  • Medical students from Melbourne University Medical School
  • Nursing students from RMIT and LaTrobe University
  • Post graduate programs in medicine for a variety of Royal medical Colleges
  • Undergraduate training for RMIT B Appl Sci students
  • Employment in training for RMIT B Appl Sci undergraduates performing a year of professional training
  • Employment in training for Registrars preparing for FRCPA examination
  • Training of junior medical  and nursing staff
  • Engineers from the Royal Australian Army Engineering corps

Research. Austin Pathology has a long tradition in research and development and in supporting other departments and health organisations in support of research projects requiring pathology services. As part of pathology's innovative and responsive service, the needs of clinical and laboratory researchers are specifically catered for through the Clinical Trials and Research support Unit within pathology.

Research and research support at Austin Pathology falls into three main categories:

  • In-house research and development of new tests by Austin Pathology staff
  • Collaborative research projects between Austin Pathology staff and staff from other Austin Health Departments, or other health organisations such as Mercy Health and Aged Care and Northern Health
  • Direct provision of support services such as testing and specimen storage
