Expert specimen collection staff work at all Austin Pathology Collection Centres in the community, as well as for inpatients and outpatient collections at Austin Health, Mercy Hospital for Women, Werribee Mercy Hospital and Northern Health.

Collection services operate in general, at the following times:

At all other times medical staff are responsible for collection of specimens and forwarding them to the laboratory.

Some specimen collections require an appointment at one or more of our centres, for example Glucose Tolerance Test, Helicobacter Pylori Breath Test, Fine Needle Aspiration and Bone Marrow biopsy. Please call to make an appointment.

Domiciliary Collections

Home visits to collect specimens for either Hospital-in-the-Home patients or for the frail and elderly can be arranged through a domiciliary collection service which operates 7 days a week from the main Austin Hospital Collection Centre.

Central Specimen Reception

Each of the three laboratories at Austin Hospital, Northern Hospital and Werribee Mercy Hospital operate a Central Specimen Reception open 24 hrs, 7 days/week

Austin Hospital, Austin Pathology at the Austin Hospital has a Central Specimen Reception located on the

6th floor of the Harold Stokes Building,

All pathology specimens should be delivered to the Reception area, excepting Frozen Sections for Anatomical Pathology which at the Austin Hospital, should go directly to Histopathology (also on the 6th floor, Harold Stokes Building, Austin Hospital).

Courier Services

Austin Pathology has a fleet of courier cars for specimen pick up and report delivery to our clients as well as to our laboratory at the Northern Hospital. Enquiries regarding this service can be made via Central Specimen Reception. Ph: 9

There is a 24 hour Austin Health courier service for transporting specimens between the Austin and Repatriation Hospitals.

A foot courier service operates between the Mercy Hospital for Women and Austin Pathology.
