 AUSTIN PATHOLOGY is a department of Austin Health and is the largest public Pathology service in Victoria, providing Pathology services not only to Austin Health but also to Northern Health, Mercy Health and Aged Care, Thomas Embling Hospital and numerous GP's and Specialists in the community. 

The Department is managed by a Pathology Executive comprising the Director, Medical Director, Director of Anatomical Pathology, the Director of the Infectious Diseases Department and a representative from the Austin Health Executive.

A comprehensive range of routine and complex Pathology testing is offered in the areas of Autopsy, Cytopathology, Histology, Biochemistry, Blood Banking, Haematology, Microbiology and Molecular Diagnostics. The Department also receives referred work from other Pathology Providers particularly in the areas of Anatomical Pathology consultations, complex Haemostasis and Biochemistry testing.

AUSTIN PATHOLOGY plays an integral clinical role in direct care of patients. It operates an Anticoagulant Warfarin Clinic, a Stem Cell Autologous Transplant service, a Venesection service, an Infectious Diseases Clinic for Travellers and Frozen Section and Fine Needle Aspirate services. In addition the Department works closely with the Infectious Diseases Department in combatting hospital acquired infections.

Supporting Teaching and Research is a vital component of AUSTIN PATHOLOGY services. Resources are dedicated to developing new tests and supporting research and clinical trials. Many staff also participate in teaching undergraduate and post graduate students of medicine and allied health courses.

AUSTIN PATHOLOGY's clientele is supported by 9 Collection Centres, a team of experienced collection staff, a fleet of cars and a network of couriers.

The services of AUSTIN PATHOLOGY are underpinned by an extensive IT infrastructure managed by dedicated Pathology IT staff in collaboration with the expertise and resources of the Austin IT Department.

AUSTIN PATHOLOGY seeks to maintain its position at the cutting edge of Pathology analytical and clinical services. To this end, the Department constantly reviews and updates testing methodologies, instrumentation and work practices, as well as monitoring result turnaround times and other key performance indicatiors both operational and financial.
