Pathology consists of several disciplines.
Anatomical PathologyHistopathology, Cytopathology and Autopsy services are provided at Austin Pathology, including fine needle aspirates, frozen sections, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. Special expertise exists also in renal and liver transplant pathology, neuropathology, neonatal and paediatric pathology. BiochemistryFast turnaround, routine biochemistry tests are provided as well as theraputic drug monitoring, specialist protein testing, glycated haemoglobin testing for diabetics, viral serology as well as a wide range of more complex testing. Point-of-Care testing is widely supported in such areas as blood gas analysis, troponin I and glucose testing. Routine services operate 24 hrs a day, seven days a week. Clinical PharmacologyClinical Pharmacology performs a variety of pharmacokinetic drug tests and have an ongoing interest in development of new tests in this area. Austin Pathology provides a fast turnaround service for routine testing which operates 24 hrs a day, seven days a week. Included under the haematology umbrella are the Blood Transfusion Service, an Immunological testing service and a bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell transplant service. The Blood Transfusion Service provides compatible blood and blood products for patients and also operates 24 hrs a day, seven days a week. MicrobiologyMicrobiology offers a wide range of routine and complex tests in the areas of bacteriology and virology. Infection control service support is a priority with expertise in MRSA and VRE surveillance. An on-call service is available after hours (after 8.30pm Monday - Friday and after 5 pm Saturday and Sunday) Molecular DiagnosticsThis laboratory performs human genetic testing and also uses molecular detection technologies for the detection of bacteria and viruses. It operates Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm
